Abstract

The purpose of this research is to define the emerging, integrated field of smart agro-ecotourism (SAE) by systematically reviewing two parallel literatures: smart agriculture (SA) and smart ecotourism (SE). Building on this synthesis, the study proposes a conceptual framework for merging digitalisation with environmental responsibility in Indonesian agrotourism. A systematic literature review (SLR) was conducted following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. A structured search of the Scopus database identified applications of the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), and data analytics for environmental sustainability across both domains, and a thematic synthesis was performed on 80 included studies. The results show two technologically mature but conceptually unconnected research streams: smart agriculture, oriented towards production-side resource management, and smart ecotourism, oriented towards conservation-side visitor management. Cross-referencing this technological literature against existing agro-ecotourism frameworks indicates that none currently treats digital integration as a structural dimension. Drawing on this gap and on a case of practical, bottom-up integration identified in Rancamaya, Bogor, the study proposes a three-layer SAE conceptual framework and derives Pentahelix-based recommendations for its implementation in Indonesia. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first systematic review to bridge the smart agriculture and smart ecotourism literatures and to formally propose an integrated SAE framework.
